IMPORTANT MESSAGE for all drivers in Sports Libre & Racing Car Classes

February 29th, 2016 • By: Chairman Aintree, Barbon, Events, Hillclimb, News, sprint

IMPORTANT MESSAGE for drivers in Sports Libre and Racing Car Classes

Rule S10.1.11. in the 2016 MSA Yearbook has been amended to require a “currently homologated FIA safety harness”.

The new wording is :

S10.1.11. Hill Climb Super Sports Cars, Sports Libre Cars and Racing Cars must be equipped with a currently homologated FIA safety harness complying with K.2.1.3 or K.2.1.4.

Under FIA homologation, harnesses have a finite life
This means that harnesses are now “lifed” from year of manufacture (not date of purchase) and all component straps must be dated and must be in-date.
This “lifing” is contained within the FIA standard and is not stated anywhere in the Blue Book. The rule change was published for consultation and agreed in 2014, and came into effect on 1st Jan 2016.

The FIA standard is five years starting on January 1 of the year following the year of manufacture, so if you purchase cleverly you can get up to 6 years life.

Please make sure that you have in-date FIA belts for your first event as, just like your overalls, helmet, etc, your belts will be checked at scrutineering. The scrutineers have no discretion; if your belts do not comply, you will not be allowed to compete.

Many thanks to Chris Mansley (MSA Scrutineer) for bringing this to our attention.

If you have any comments regarding the consequence of belts having to be FIA homologated (eg, it was not stated that this would result in belts having a finite life) then you should raise this directly with a member of the MSA Speed Committee, or the MSA Sprint & Hillclimb sub-committee ASAP. They are your representatives in the rule making process.

FHR Guidance updated by MSA

February 2nd, 2016 • By: Chairman Aintree, Barbon, Events, Hillclimb, News, sprint, trackdays

The MSA has updated its guidance notes for Frontal Head Restraints (FHR’s) of the type that relies on harnesses to maintain their integrity (eg HANS).

There is no change to the use of Hybrid FHR’s (eg Simpson) which many competitors find more comfortable and more easily adaptable for use between cars or indeed different drivers.

The update is well worth reading and is available on the MSA website:

Rally of the Tests, 8th November – Help needed

November 2nd, 2015 • By: Chairman Events, News, Uncategorized

We are looking for people to help marshal/observe a stage on the Rally of the Tests at Weeton Camp on Sunday (8th November). Are you interested? If you want to help (and previous experience isn’t necessary) please let John Harden know ASAP via our contact page

The Rally of the Tests is an international endurance rally for classic cars run over 3 days in the style of the RAC Rally of the 1950’s/1960’s.

This year’s event starts in Northumberland and makes its way through the Scottish borders, back to Darlington and then via various tests and regularity sections to finish in Blackpool.

Weeton Camp is an army barracks just north of the M65 between Preston and Blackpool that sees various rallies during the year including the prestigious North West Stages. Rally of the Tests is visiting it this year for the first time to take part in two reasonably long and tightly times tests (ie special stages).

The cars will look just as they did back in the days that they would have been when competing when new(ish) and many competitors dress in the style that competitors would have been seen in their particular car in its heyday. Marshals used to be asked to dress in period style too, but in view of the weather in recent years this is no longer requested. But there’s no need for orange overalls etc and our duties are basically observing the cars on the tests and noting any errors on check-sheets provided by the organisers.

But don’t think that they will be taking it gently. The event is a qualifying round of various UK & European historic championships, and whilst some cars may pass by fairly sedately because after 3 days of rallying they just want to get to the finish, others will be trying just as hard as modern cars would be. The event will be filmed for Motors TV too, so you never know, we may be featured at some point.

Watch out for Car 26, the Porsche 911 crewed by previous winners Howard Warren & Ian Tullie. As navigator, Ian is twice European Historic Rally Champion navigator and he will be persuading his driver to give it all on this event too!

There’s lots more background here: http://www.heroevents.eu/Events/rally_of_the_tests/2015  and the entry list is here http://www.heroevents.eu/Events/rally_of_the_tests/2015/entries

It’s an enjoyable afternoon and with any luck, we should be packed up and away again before dark (hopefully).

If you want to come along to help, please let me know ASAP and, being MOD land, the venue is a not open to spectators so the only way you’ll be able to watch the action is by offering to marshal for a couple of hours. Our two tests at Weeton are right at the end of the rally, and it’s quite possible that the result of the whole 3 day event could be decided here. Signing on is from 1pm – 1.30pm with the first car less than an hour later.

I’ll be there, will you?
