Noise Testing at Track Days

By • April 6th, 2011

After many years of judging acceptable sound levels “by ear”, we have been obliged to start sound testing (ie noise testing) at our Aintree Track Days this year.

Starting with the May 2011 track day , all cars will have to pass a noise test and must not exceed 105dB(a) taken 0.5m from the exhaust at 75% max revs. Any car that fails this test will not be allowed to take part until it does comply and, we regret, no refund will be given. Sample testing may also be undertaken during the course of the day if a car appears to be particularly loud and the driver given the chance to reduce noise levels. If the car cannot be brought back within 105dB(a), then it will not be allowed to participate further.
Note that this test is 105dB(a) conducted at three quarters of max revs, not 108dB(a) at two thirds of max revs as permitted in sprinting.

We have adopted the sound level used by the majority of track day operators so, if you take part elsewhere, your car should pass the test at Aintree. However, the onus is on the driver to ensure that their car complies, so please ensure that your car is okay before you book to take part in an Aintree Track Day.
